Additional rules of thumb to keep in mind:

  • For shared images, horizontal (“landscape”) orientation is generally recommended, as it takes up more real estate in the News Feed. Square or vertical images will be scaled down and leave white space to the right of the image. However, in mobile, vertical (“portrait”) images are optimal.
  • The page name and category are overlayed onto the bottom of the cover photo. To keep this white text legible, it is optimal to make that area of the cover photo a darker color.

  • Many sources state that the recommended header image size is 1500 x 500. Our recommendation is to upload at a higher resolution for better viewing on larger screens.
  • While it is tempting to use the large amount of header image space to house useful information, it will be obstructed by the profile picture and bio in mobile. This is something to keep in mind if much of your audience will be viewing your Twitter page on mobile devices.

  • Since Tumblr is highly customizable, and with the variety of themes available, the way images appear on a Tumblr page will vary greatly. However, they will all be viewed at up to 500 px wide by 750 px high in the user’s dashboard.
